How to Create a Webmail Email Account

So, you only have that business e-mail address, and you’re not allowed to use it out of work. You want an email of your own that you can use anytime you want? Read this guide!

Steps

  1. Search. Search on your favorite search engine, such as Google or Ask Jeeves. Search “email” and “mail” as your search terms. View every page that says free email.
  2. Features. Does it have Virus Protection? Does it have a spam filter? How much space is there to put all of your emails in?
  3. POP/IMAP/SMTP. Can you receive emails through POP or IMAP servers? Can you use their SMTP servers? Can you do all this for free?
  4. Pick an email provider from that Search Engine search. Which one has these features?
  5. Name. Pick a good name. Short names attract more spam such as bob@gmail.com. If you make your username your full name such as john.smith@gmail.com, you might get a lot of spam as well because some spammers try random names like that. You might want to try something longer.
  6. Registration. Register that perfect username. Remember to use it only for personal use. If you will get some email from your business put them in your contacts or a whitelist, so the mails from your business won’t get into your spam/bulk mail folder.

Tips

  • It’s not worth paying for an email address. You can get a free email address at Gmail for free that has about 2500 megabites (and counting!) and is pretty reliable.

Warnings

  • Don’t make that many email accounts.

How to Create a Cool Email Address

Are you tired of using your boring email address? Whether, it be a form of your real name, or an address that just doesn’t suit you anymore, this article will teach you how to make your email address as cool as possible!

Steps

  1. Think about what you’re interested in, and try to use your interest as part of your email address. For example, if you’re into reality TV you might want to start off your email address with realitytv.
  2. Think of a word that sounds interesting before or after your interest, and combine the two to form your email address. For example, if you chose to start off your email address with realitytv you might want to choose realitytvfanatic, or crazyforealitytv.
  3. Sign up for an email account, and type the email address you decided on in the last step into the desired user name or login name field.

Tips

  • Make sure you tell all of your friends your new email address. You most certainly don’t want them to continue to email you at your old address.
  • In the event that somebody else already took the email address you decided on try adding your favorite number after it. Just remember, that the number will also be part of your email address in that scenario.
  • Make your email address memorable. You may meet someone one day and they might ask you for your email, and you certainly don’t want them to forget it.

Warnings

  • Don’t make your email address too personal. You may eventually need to give your email to a website or to a person you don’t know well, so don’t put your address, a password you use frequently online, your social security number, or anything else you don’t want getting into the wrong hands.
  • Potential employers will frown upon job applicants who provide silly email addresses. Create a more sensible email address as your job applications email address.
  • Don’t make your email a long stream of nonsense. This is frowned upon for two reasons. One, people will always forget your email address, and two, if you email someone who doesn’t know your email address already they might be confused about your identity.

Things You’ll Need

  • Creativity
  • Computer with Internet access

How to Create Small URL Links

Ever wanted to send someone a website link only to find it was longer than your message?

Here is an example of one of those long links:

www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?ovi=1&mqmap.x=300&mqmap.y=75&mapdata=
%252bKZmeiIh6N%252bIgpXRP3bylMaN0O4z8OOUkZWYe7NRH6ldDN96YFTIUmSH3Q6
OzE5XVqcuc5zb%252fY5wy1MZwTnT2pu%252bNMjOjsHjvNlygTRMzqazPStrN%252f
1YzA0oWEWLwkHdhVHeG9sG6cMrfXNJKHY6fML4o6Nb0SeQm75ET9jAjKelrmqBCNta%
252bsKC9n8jslz%252fo188N4g3BvAJYuzx8J8r%252f1fPFWkPYg%252bT9Su5KoQ9
YpNSj%252bmo0h0aEK%252bofj3f6vCP

Note how ghastly the formatting has become. Imagine pasting that into an email with the message, “Check out this map of Boston!” Here is a way to fix those unwieldy links using TinyURL.com.

Steps

  1. Go to the TinyURL website. Look for “Add TinyURL to your browser’s toolbar”.
  2. Drag the link to your toolbar. It adds Javascript to the browser button. You only need to do this once.
  3. Open the link you want to send someone in a browser window and then click the TinyURL button. It automatically converts the link into a much smaller one, which you can easily cut and paste into your email.
  4. Now, that ghastly, original link from above will be condensed to “tinyurl.com/o2mqu”. The link never expires!

Tips

  • SnipURL is another website that offers a similar functionality.
  • iSuccess sells a cheap script ($10.00) that lets you do your own TinyURL. A video showing how it works is on YouTube.

Warnings

  • Be forewarned that many wiki-websites [including wikiHow] have most URL-shortening services blacklisted, due to spam issues. Thus, you will not be able to add them onto an article.
  • Some people may hesitate to click a link that uses a URL-shortening service fearing spam or even viruses.

How to Create More Space in your Email Account

Running out of room? Here’s a way to clear up your email without losing any messages.

Steps

  1. Open your email account.
  2. Delete as many emails as you see fit, but don’t empty the “trash can”.
  3. Delete all empty folders.
  4. Once you’ve done this, you should have all the room you want, and can still access the deleted emails as long as you don’t empty the bin.
  5. Unwanted spam should be reported, that way whenever that person sends mail, it doesn’t waste valuable space in your inbox.
  6. If you can, get a larger inbox. Gmail offers some 6700 mb so far- more than enough for the average person.

Tips

  • Keep important emails undeleted.

Warnings

  • You may lose your emails if not careful. In Yahoo! mail, and in Gmail, the trash can is periodically emptied.
  • Don’t let anyone else use your email account.
  • Make sure your recycle bin does not count towards your email quota.

Things You’ll Need

  • An email account
  • Emails
  • Recycle bin (on internet)
  • Internet

How to Convince Your Parents to Let You Get an Email Address

Email is an easy way to communicate with friends and family, but getting your parents to let you have your own email address can be tough. Some parents are worried because they’ve never used email before; others are worried because they don’t think you’re ready for email yet. Either way, here are some tips to help convince them that you are ready for your very own email address.

Steps

  1. Calmly give arguments for the usefulness of an email address. For example, explain that an email address might help you with your homework–if you’re sick and you miss an assignment, your friends can send it to you instantly.
  2. Write or print out some rules you’ll follow to stay safe, and give the list of rules to your parents. Tell them that you would be willing to have them monitor your email messages if they’d like to, and let them know that you will talk only to people you know and trust.
  3. Explain to them that email is usually free. You can make a mail.com account or a hotmail.com account for free, and you generally can do it without giving up too much personal information.

Tips

  • Be polite when asking.
  • Find a chore around the house that you don’t mind doing, and offer to do it weekly if they’ll let you have an email address. This will prove to them that you are becoming more responsible and mature.
  • If they decline, accept it. Maybe it is just not the right time, and you can always try again another time.

How to Convert Andrew Message System Mail to Osx Mail

Until the late 90s, Carnegie Mellon University’s e-mail service was done with the Andrew Message System (AMS). Messages were viewed on programs such as BatMail, EZMail, and MacMail, which was the client for the Mac. AMS allowed users to save e-mail archives in a single file with a “.data” extension. The AMS clients used an additional index file to import these archives. At present, OSX does not recognize AMS e-mail archives and is unlikely to given the program’s obsolescence. This tutorial provides a quick hack to get your old archives into a modern e-mail program. It assumes a basic understanding of how the OSX terminal works.

Steps

  • Open the OSX terminal, and put an MacMail archive into your current working directory. You can identify it by the “.data” extension.
  • Each new message in an Andrew Message System archive begins with a “[27,”. OSX Mail has an import option titled “Other” which requires that the first line be of the format “From a@b.c Thu Aug 16 15:40:28 1995″ . You’re going to substitute the former text string for the latter using the awk command. For an archive titled, “input_file.data”, type the following in the Terminal’s command line: awk ‘{ gsub( /\[27,/,”From a@b.c Thu Aug 16 15:40:28 1995\n”); print }’ input_file.data > cmu_mail.mbox
  • Go into OSX’s Mail program, and click “File->Import Mailboxes.”
  • Select “Other,” click “Continue,” and the click into the directory containing the cmu_mail.mbox file. Make sure that only the cmu_mail.mbox file has a checkmark next to it.
  • You should now be able to access your ancient e-mails.

How to Choose the Right Email for You

Out of all the (free) Email services on the Internet, which one is the best for you? This will help you narrow the choices down to the best one for your needs.

Steps

  1. Think about what you really need out of your email host. If you are a person who needs massive amounts of space. This should accommodate all the large emails you receive. Keep in mind that many large email providers don’t last long (e.g. 30gigs is one such email host which was discontinued).
  2. If you need lots of space and simplicity, Gmail is the one for you.
    • Gmail continually gives you more space. It is currently offering approximately 6.5 gigabytes of space.
    • While Gmail is an extremely simple email program, it has a large number of features and 30 different languages, but if you just want to receive and send emails, you can just ignore these options.
    • Another great thing about Gmail is that you have no banner ads. Only relevant text ads are discreetly shown on the side. It also allows you to search for emails and organize them into as many different folders as you want.
    • If you are worried about getting junk mail, Gmail is a great way to go.
    • Gmail allows you to send 10MB of attachments in each email.
    • Gmail incorporates several brilliant features - RSS feeds, integrated Google search for your mail, labels, conversations, free auto forwarding, sending email from other email accounts (after verifying that they are yours) and lots more. With the huge space for emails, there’s no need to delete emails. You can easily just archive them.
    • Gmail has the best email search ever. With a search bar right up top, you can search every word of every email you’ve ever sent and received within seconds.
    • They have also very recently integrated Gtalk (a form of instant messaging), which is very popular as well.
    • The best thing about Gmail is that it’s always being improved upon. If you ever have an idea of a better way to do something or a feature that you want to see, it is very easy to contact them and make suggestions. If you have any problems, their help page is extensive and easy to find what you need. If you can’t find it, you can email them for help and you’re guaranteed to get a response. You’re guaranteed to be happy with Gmail.
  3. If you just need a simple email program to send and receive with few features, choose Yahoo! Mail.
    • A lot of people use Yahoo!Mail just for signing up for things they don’t want to be spammed by, and since Yahoo! Mail is not JavaScript based, it is faster on most computers.
    • Yahoo! Mail has a new version in limited beta in which they are turning the interface into a more desktop like one.
    • One problem is that Yahoo! has large banner ads and adds an advertisement onto your emails, however you can press an arrow which hides them.
    • Another good things about Yahoo! is that you get unlimited space.
  4. Hotmail is another program.
    • It has features, but a limited amount of space.
    • It is also a little complicated for the non-computer savvy person. 2MB storage (NOTE: after 30 days, account storage bumps up to 250MB), signatures, stationary, HTML compatible.
    • It also has a limited beta version, named Windows Live Mail, that offers 2GB storage, and some good features.(see How to Get a Windows Live Mail Account to learn how to sign up)
  5. Mail.com Is a straight-forward and easy to use email. Offers 3GBs of storage and attachment sizes up to 10MB.
    • There are hundreds of personalized addresses to choose from which makes them unique among all the other free email providers.
    • Has recently been re-designed. Pop-ups have been removed, storage space has been increased, new anti-spam technology added, there is a ton of new content, it’s starting to look a lot like a news portal, which is great if you like that sort of thing.
    • They do have some nice features. Notepad, calendar, address book, pop3, email forwarding, SMS email (costs money), games…
    • Overall, it is a good email program but still has room for improvement.
  6. Lycos Offers 5MB of storage, spam fighting tools, HTML composer, domain and address blocking.
    • It is a little harder to understand and use, but it is usable. It has banner ads and blinking lights, but if you don’t mind these, it is alright.
    • It can automatically send an email to anyone who sends you an email. To upgrade to the better version will cost you.
  7. WorldEmail allows users to email search and create web-based email, but users are typically bombarded by pop-ups and annoying banner ads.
    • It also includes an address book, signatures, spam filters, a calendar, spell check, priority setting, attachments, and encryptions.
    • Kind of difficult to use.

Tips

  • This article does not contain information on pay-to-use email programs.
  • All of the email programs are tested and have the information provided by the web site and the tests. Feel free to add some information yourself if you feel it is wrongly put forward.

Warnings

Some email programs charge for sign ups. The ones listed above do not.
